Pretty much half the time you're watching TV, flipping through a magazine, or even talking to your friends, Target comes up. And as a businesswoman, I admire them for that. They have done an amazing job making necessities and home living trendy and fun (even if it often isn't). And bringing 'design' to the masses, well, they've got it down pat. Working with famous designers to bring specialized and fashionable products to people all over the country, and not just clothes, but housewares, linens, decorative items, and even beauty products. On top of all this, they give back to the communities they're in, donating 5% of their income to things like education, arts & culture, and social services. Let's just say, I'm a fan. But of course, these mondo companies that spring up everywhere there's a parking lot are also an environmentalist's nightmare. All that inexpensive product has to come from somewhere, and that somewhere is usually China, i.e. not so eco-friendly. But luckily, being green is also pretty trendy...and Target has definitely jumped on board. Now, I can't say their organic products don't come from China, but the fact is, they have organic products - and lots of them.Like these bamboo storage boxes - they're simple and stackable, so you can use them in a closet or out on a shelf and either way, they're made from a sustainable material and nice to look at. And speaking of nice to look at, why not a lovely mirror with a frame made from recycled paper?
Or this recycled paper tray?
And one of the things that people don't usually think about when it comes to home decor or being green, is linens. They're not only something that can help make your favorite place (i.e. your bed) look better, more inviting, and more relaxing, but sleeping on something made from a sustainable material and natural dye actually does help you sleep better!
And don't forget the little ones... organics for babies is probably one of the biggest markets, and whether it's blankie's or bibs, Target has it.
I do think I've seen some great things in their stores I haven't found online, so don't forget to check out your store. And remember, they take comments. The more we as consumers request eco-friendly products, the more they'll bring 'em.
